When lock enthusiasts talk about “high-security” cylinders, the term is frequently tossed around as marketing jargon. But in the physical locksmithing realm, true high security (UL 437 rated) requires physical resistance against two distinct attack vectors: rotational shear line manipulation and sidebar deadlocking.
Among all classic pin-tumbler systems, the Medeco Biaxial remains one of the most elegant mechanical puzzles ever engineered. Today on Bench 01, we are breaking down a 6-pin Medeco Biaxial rim cylinder, exploring its chiral pin geometry, and demonstrating how rotational gating prevents traditional single-pin picking (SPP).
Dual-Axis Mechanics: The Core Concept
In a standard Schlage or Kwikset lock, each bottom pin only requires translation: the key lifts the pin vertically until the gap between the bottom pin and the top driver aligns with the cylinder’s shear line.
Medeco adds a second, independent axis of motion: Pin Rotation.

The Chisel Tip & Angled Cuts
If you inspect a Medeco key under magnification, the cuts are not flat horizontal shelves like standard keys. Each cut is angled at 20 degrees off-perpendicular, sloping either forward (Fore), neutral (Center), or rearward (Aft).
The bottom of each Medeco pin is shaped like a wedge chisel. When the angled key ramp drives into the keyway:
- The ramp lifts the pin to the proper depth (shear line height).
- The 20° angled surface drives the chisel tip, forcing the entire cylindrical pin body to rotate around its vertical axis.
The Hardened Sidebar Mechanism
Along the side of the brass plug runs a spring-loaded, case-hardened steel bar known as the sidebar.
On the side of each Medeco pin, a precision vertical slot (called a gate) is machined. The sidebar has small rectangular projections (fingers) that correspond to each pin chamber.
- If all 6 pins are lifted to the correct height AND rotated to the precise degree where the sidebar gates face inward, the sidebar springs collapse into the pin gates.
- Once the sidebar collapses flush into the plug, the plug can freely turn inside the housing.
- If even one pin is off by 20 degrees, its solid sidewall blocks the sidebar finger, deadlocking the cylinder regardless of whether the shear line is clear.
Decoding & Impressioning on the Prairie
In rural commercial facilities—such as regional water treatment plants, grain terminal control rooms, and rural fire halls across Westman—Medeco is the standard specification.
When servicing an undocumented cylinder without a code card:
- Decoder Blade Reading: We utilize an illuminated optoelectronic depth micrometer to measure the depth step (1 through 6).
- Angle Inspection: Using a 10x jeweler’s loupe under directional LED bench lighting, we observe the angle of the chisel bevel.
- Sidebar Gate Location: We cross-reference the pin code against the master key chart to confirm there are no ghost cuts that compromise master integrity.
Craftsmanship & Bench Discipline
Working on these cylinders demands pristine bench habits. Dropping a #3 Fore-cut pin onto a concrete shop floor is a test of patience; each pin is stamped with microscopic identifiers (3F, 4B, 2C) on its side that require a loupe to verify.
In an upcoming craft log, I will showcase how we machine custom brass plug followers specifically grooved to accommodate Medeco sidebars without shearing the delicate spring retainers.
